Production Traceability System: Practical Architecture
Production traceability connects material identity, work orders, WIP events, quality status, process history, and finished-goods genealogy so teams can reconstruct what happened.
Define the traceability question first
Decide what the business must answer: where a material lot was used, which serials share a component, which process conditions applied, what quality event occurred, or which shipments contain an affected lot.
Use stable operational identifiers
Use consistent identifiers for part, lot, serial, work order, operation, location, equipment, user, quality status, and transaction time. Free-text references should not be the primary genealogy key.
Record state-changing events
Capture receiving, issue, consume, split, merge, move, complete, hold, release, rework, scrap, pack, and ship events with before/after context.
Test recall and audit scenarios
Validate forward trace, backward trace, partial lot, rework, replacement material, missing interface data, and exportable audit evidence. Measure trace completion and search time against baseline.
